Is IELTS Difficult?

A lot of people have these 2 misconceptions
- I know English, I can crack IELTS very easily
- IELTS is difficult to achieve
The difference between the two is of people of two types, the ones who have studied English and have grasp over the languages and second the ones who were always afraid of it. Let me tell you one thing, both are wrong. IELTS is neither a cakewalk nor a walk through the thorns if you have the following
- Good grasp on the language
- Time management
Yes, only these two aspects can help you clear the exam.
IELTS exam pattern
There is plenty of information available on this topic but nobody tells you of the most crucial aspect TIME MANAGEMENT. We once had a student who took admission with us saying “I always got all the answers right whenever I practiced sample papers but I got overall 5.5 bands and I am very disappointed”. To which our trainer asked “but how were you practicing?”
He said “I bought books of last 5 years’ sample papers and I solved them day & night”. Our trainer smirked “That’s where it went wrong”. You see, IELTS is a timed exam and you have to learn time management. Our trainers run strict simulations and time based sample papers to solve the papers hence our students do not feel the pressure of the exam.
Myths around IELTS exam
- I know English. I can solve the exam: This we have already addressed.
- We do not need trainers to train us for the exam: Again that’s wrong because you don’t have the experience of getting grilled. 😝
- Using high end vocabulary is important: Again, wrong answer! Students try to mug up hard words to impress the examiner but that’s not how it functions. In real life do we talk like that? The examiner has to understand that you are capable of having a conversation comfortably in English.
Modules of IELTS exam
We all know IELTS has 4 modules, let’s understand them one by one.
Listening: Listening has four parts and 40 questions. Recordings include different speakers, situations and accents.
Speaking: Speaking has three parts: an interview, an individual long turn and a discussion.
Reading: The Reading section lasts 60 minutes. Candidates need to manage time across the full section. The only difference is, we know if 1 question is from para 1 then the answer to the second question will be in PARA 2 and so on. But sadly, it doesn’t function the same way in IELTS. You should know every word, every line of a paragraph and answer the questions in 30 mins. Sounds crazy right? It isn’t. We help our students achieve that with just 10 days of rigorous simulations.
Writing: General Training Task 1 involves a letter; Academic Task 1 involves describing visual information. Both tests also have Task 2, an essay.
Now out of all of these, our students and everyone thinks it is speaking BUT what you don’t know it is Listening. Yes! You read it right because you do not know the accent that might come, you do not know the words, you do not know the story behind it and on top of that you are doing two tasks at a time, trying to understand the audio and answer the questions.
