German B1 — Start Using German Independently

B1 is where your German becomes significantly more functional. Instead of communicating only in predictable situations, you’ll learn to express your thoughts, experiences, opinions and plans with greater independence.

You’ll work with longer conversations and texts, expand your vocabulary and strengthen your grammar so that you can communicate about everyday, academic and professional topics. You’ll also develop the ability to explain ideas, describe experiences, give reasons for your opinions and understand the main points of clear standard German.

By the end of B1, you should be able to:

• Participate in conversations about familiar personal, social and professional topics
• Describe experiences, events, goals, plans and ambitions
• Express opinions and give simple reasons and explanations
• Understand the main points of clear, standard German in familiar contexts
• Read and understand longer everyday and practical texts
• Write connected texts such as emails, descriptions and personal or professional messages
• Handle most common situations that may arise while travelling or living in a German-speaking environment

End goal: Become an independent German user who can communicate meaningfully beyond basic situations and manage everyday, social and professional interactions with much greater confidence.
